2023 medical coding updates: 10 things to know about the latest coding guidelines
A rundown of the latest CPT coding revisions

The year is still new. And just like every year there are a lot of medical coding updates and guidelines to learn. The latest changes consist of more than 220 additional codes. 93 old codes have been deleted and there are sweeping revisions to existing codes.

The latest changes aim to add more granularity and specificity. This is a quick round up of this year’s biggest coding revisions and guidelines.


10 coding updates to know about this year:

1 Level one consultation codes have been deleted. Though Medicare doesn’t reimburse consultation codes, most payers do. The codes 99241 and 99251 are no longer effective.


2 CPT guidelines have been revised to allow hospital E/M to report multiple medical services when a patient is admitted as an inpatient or during observation. However, the coding regulation for CMS remains the same.


3 Prolonged services codes 99354, 99355, 99356, and 99357 have been deleted. The codes for face-to-face prolonged care in both inpatient and outpatient settings have been sunsetted. The prolonged care codes for non face to face encounters have been retained.


4 There is a new add on code for prolonged services that can be used when the highest level of
E/M is reached.


5 A new section has been added for initial and subsequent visits and is applicable to hospitals, nursing facilities and observation care codes.


6 Fifteen new CPT codes have been added for abdominal hernia repair.


7 CPT has also made revisions to remote therapeutic monitoring for family physicians. The new revisions add more clarity. The introductory guidelines have also been changed.


8 The latest CPT revisions do not categorize emergency department visits as new or established patients.


9 The most substantial changes are made to evaluation and management codes in hospitals and nursing home settings.
